The renamed flagship Ford Ranger Raptor X is the fourth price rise in three years and adds a few cosmetic changes to stay fresh until the next model arrives with turbo V6 power.

  • 2021 Ford Ranger pricing and specification
  • Raptor X arrives as flagship model, with strips and new sports bar
  • FX4 variants returns, with black detailing and decals
  • On sale in July, from $59,990 before on-road costs from a manual FX4

The Ford Ranger Raptor has gained racing stripes, a sports bar, and black accents inside and out to keep the flagship model looking fresh before the next generation turns up next year, likely with turbo V6 power under the bonnet instead of the current model’s twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel.

Ford is yet to confirm the timing of the next Ranger Raptor or what engine will be under the bonnet, though there has been unsubstantiated speculation a turbo petrol V6 will be offered in the US and a turbo diesel V6 will be offered in Australia, both in response to criticism the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel offered currently isn’t worthy of the Ford Performance badge.

The next generation Ford Ranger Raptor is expected to arrive not long after the regular Ranger line-up turns up in local showrooms in early 2022.

Meantime, Ford Australia needs to keep selling the current model.

As part of the running changes, the model is now called the Ford Ranger Raptor X and the price has risen to $79,390 plus on-road costs, which is $1700 dearer than before and $4400 more expensive than when it launched in August 2018 priced from $74,990.

The Ford Ranger Raptor X and revived Ford Ranger FX4 are due in Australian showrooms in July 2021.

Features on the 2021 Ford Ranger Raptor X include:

  • Over the top (OTT) body stripes covering the bonnet, roof and tailgate
  • Asphalt Black matte alloy wheels
  • Extended leg sports bar
  • Red front tow hooks
  • Black Ford logo on tailgate
  • Matte grille, front bumper, over fenders, door handles, tailgate handle, fender vent, mirror scalps, fog lamp bezel, rear bumper cover and wheel caps
  • Red stitching on the steering wheel and dash replaces the original blue stitching
  • Black accents across the dash and doors

There is no extra power for the Ford Ranger Raptor X. It retains the same 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder (157kW/500Nm) paired to a 10-speed auto activated by shift paddles, as before.

Meanwhile, the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 slots between the XLT and FX4 Max variants.

Features on the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 include:

  • Black accents across the dash and doors
  • Darkened Bi-LED High Performance headlight clusters;
  • FX4 black mesh grille;
  • 18-inch FX4 alloy wheels (instead of the XLT’s 17s);
  • 3D effect FX4 front door decal;
  • 3D effect FX4 tailgate decal;
  • Black FX4 extended sports bar;
  • Black exterior mirrors, door and tailgate handles and fender features;
  • FX4 leather-accented seats with contrasting red stitching and FX4 logos;
  • Premium soft-touch instrument panel top with red stitching;
  • Graphite accents on instrument panel and door trims.

As before, the Ford Ranger FX4 will be available with a choice of a 3.2-litre five-cylinder diesel with six-speed manual ($59,990 plus on-road costs) or six-speed auto ($62,190 plus on-road costs) – or a twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel and 10-speed auto ($63,690).

These prices represent increases of about $1000 compared to the previous Ford Ranger FX4 introduced in August 2019.

The 2021 Ford Ranger line-up will arrive in local showrooms in July 2021.
