2022 Australian F1 GP scheduled for April 10 – report

After two years without an Australian Formula One Grand Prix due to coronavirus lockdowns and travel restrictions, a preliminary calendar has the Melbourne event pegged as the third race of the 2022 season.

The Australian Formula One Grand Prix is scheduled to become the third race of the 2022 season, according to a provisional calendar published by Auto Action magazine.

A report by veteran Formula One journalist Dan Knutson says the 2022 Australian F1 GP is tentatively locked in for Melbourne on April 10, 2022.

The event has been held at Albert Park – a road circuit purpose-built for F1 racing – since 1996, but was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to coronavirus lockdowns and travel restrictions.

The Australian Grand Prix had been the opening round of the Formula One championship for the previous 10 years, but is now is the third event on a 23-race provisional calendar.

The 2022 F1 calendar is expected to be announced tomorrow, but even then it may be subject to change in the same way the 2021 F1 championship has shifted a number of rounds throughout the season.

Motorsport insiders say Australia may also lose the 2022 slot in the calendar if there is a disagreement between Formula One organisers and the Victorian Government over travel restrictions and quarantine conditions amid the coronavirus crisis.

The preliminary calendar shows there will be a record 23 races in the 2022 season (after an average of 19 races annually over the past decade, and 22 events this year).

The plan is for the opening round to be held in Bahrain on March 20 and the final round to be held in Abu Dhabi on November 20, meaning the start and finish of the 2022 F1 championship will be in the Middle East.

“Formula 1 is particularly anxious to avoid conflicts with the FIFA World Cup that starts in Qatar on November 21,” Auto Action reported.

Furthermore, the magazine said, some F1 team bosses – notably Toto Wolff for the Mercedes-AMG team and Gunther Steiner for the back-marker Haas team – have “expressed concerns about the strain on the team members during next year’s gruelling schedule,” Auto Action reported.

Some F1 teams have reportedly asked the sport’s governing body to make it mandatory for teams rotate support staff, the magazine reported.
