The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross is due in Australian showrooms next month, priced from $33,000 plus on-road costs.

Revealed overseas two years ago, the new Corolla Cross sits between the Yaris Cross and RAV4 in Toyota’s range – and as a more practical alternative to the sportier C-HR.

Three model grades will be available – GX, GXL and Atmos – with a choice of a 2.0-litre petrol engine with front-wheel drive, or hybrid power with front- or all-wheel drive.

All versions of the Corolla Cross cost about $500 to $1500 less than equivalent RAV4 models. Measuring about 4460mm long and 1825mm wide, the Corolla Cross is about 140mm shorter and 30mm narrower than a RAV4.

Powering the price-leading petrol variants is a 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine developing 126kW – nearly identical with the RAV4 and Corolla hatch/sedan – coupled to a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive.

Australian specifications of the Corolla Cross Hybrid have not been announced, however it will use a 2.0-litre petrol engine (with 112kW on its own) and electric motors of unknown outputs.

Overseas, power is rated at 146kW. Front and all-wheel-drive (with an electric motor driving the rear wheels) options are available in Australia.

Toyota’s website confirms the entry-level GX hybrid claims to sip 4.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in the city, or 4.6L/100km on the highway – about 0.3L/100km less than an equivalent RAV4.

Standard features in the Corolla Cross GX include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, fabric seats, auto-folding mirrors, six speakers, and a full suite of advanced safety features.

The Corolla Cross is slated to debut its maker’s latest-generation infotainment system in a Toyota in Australia, with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, over-the-air updates, and support for an expanded suite of Toyota Connected Services features.

The system runs on an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the GX, or a 10.5-inch touchscreen in the GXL and flagship Atmos. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster features in the Atmos, a first for a Toyota in Australia.
