Jeep sues Mahindra over Thar SUV design

American auto giant Jeep is suing Indian automaker Mahindra, but this time in Australia.

Jeep lawyers are trying to stop Mahindra from selling the Thar SUV in Australia because the car is very similar to the Wrangler. Looking at these two cars, it’s hard not to see the similarities

Mahindra’s lawyers say the company has no intention of introducing Thar to Australia. However, Jeep’s legal team responded by showing a website where motorists could declare their interest in buying a Thar in Australia.

After entering their email address, customers received an email stating, “Thank you for your request for a brand new Mahindra Thar. As we get closer to the launch of this exciting new vehicle in Australia, we will be communicating with you at this email address. ”

However, Mahindra has imported the Thar to Australia but has not yet received certification to sell it.

During the hearing, Jeep’s lawyers requested 90 days’ notice if Mahindra intends to bring the Thar to market. The Indian concern asked for this period to be 45 days.

Both parties will be in court again on May 21 for a new hearing.

The 2021 Mahindra Thar debuted in August 2020 with a body very similar to the Wrangler. In India, this is not a problem because the company has the right to sell the CJ Jeep Wrangler there. The car is available with a 2.0-liter petrol engine producing 150 hp. or a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with 130 hp. Buyers can choose 6MKPP or 6AKPP. There is an incomplete four-wheel drive with a lower transfer case.

Jeep and Mahindra have already met in court. In 2019, an American judge found an Indian company guilty of trademark infringement because the Roxor looked too much like the famous American SUV. The court later temporarily banned the sale of Roxor in the United States. The US International Trade Commission has approved the 2021 Mahindra Roxor project, which will go on sale in late 2020.
