The absolute flagship of the German concern makes an inconspicuous entrance. Mercedes-Maybach has officially released a press release detailing the new S680.

The Mercedes-AMG S65 may be dead, but connoisseurs shouldn’t worry as its V12 engine will live in an ultra-chic version of the Maybach. The sedan, which rivals the Bentley W12, was originally announced last year ahead of the world premiere of the regular Benz S-Class.

The day before, the novelty quietly appeared on the Daimler website, since the adjacent official images were not immediately accompanied by a press release. The extra-long luxury sedan has the same stylish two-tone paint job and an abundance of chrome as the V8 unveiled in November 2020.

The main upgrade for the S680 is the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that develops 621 hp. and a powerful 1000 Nm. The novelty is a direct successor to the previous generation Maybach S650.

Power is enough to accelerate the impressive luxury sedan from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds. Although the top speed is electronically limited to 210 km / h per hour.

For the first time with a top-end V12 engine, power is transmitted to all four wheels via the Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel drive system. In the S680, 69% of the power is sent to the rear wheels, while the remainder of the power is sent to the front wheels via the 9A automatic transmission. As with the S580, the flagship V12 is equipped with rear steering.

V12 badges adorn the front fenders and the boot lid features the S680 logo.

Mercedes isn’t ready to reveal everything about the new S680 just yet. The start of sales of new items is scheduled for the first half of 2022.
