The car that convinced Jennifer Lopez to drive again

Jennifer Lopez hadn’t driven in 25 years when her former fiancé gave her a car she couldn’t resist, a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet.

Jennifer Lopez may now be married to Ben Affleck after they exchanged vows in a Las Vegas drive-through wedding, but the memory of her prior relationship with baseball player Alex Rodriguez lingers on… in her car collection.

The singer-turned-actress has an enviable garage full of luxury vehicles – including a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and Bentley Continental GTC – but arguably the most impressive inclusion is a 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet.

The Carmine Red, drop-top 911 was a gift from Lopez’s former fiancé, Alex Rodriguez, for her 50th birthday in late 2019.

A 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet cost more than $AU280,000 when new, but Rodriguez had the car customised by Florida tuning shop Ocean Auto Club, likely adding even more to the price tag.

The two-door, four-seat convertible boasts a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six-cylinder engine and is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 310km/h.

Rodriguez, who made his fortune playing Major League Baseball, documented the process of buying the car in a video for his YouTube channel, in which he revealed that Lopez hadn’t been behind the wheel in more than two decades.

“The irony is, we’re going to buy her a car, but she hasn’t driven in 25 years,” Rodriguez said.

“She loves cars though and she has a driver’s license and it’s valid,” Rodriguez’s daughter, Ella, added.

The reason for Lopez’s long-running driving abstinence? The singer – who is worth an estimated US$400 million – typically uses a chauffeur, or opts for the passenger seat when travelling with her partners.

Notably, the other cars in her collection all feature larger back seats, while the second row of the 911 GTS Cabriolet is less than accommodating for its occupants – leaving Lopez no choice than to drive it herself.

Rodriguez and his kids surprised Lopez with the car at home, prompting the singer to break her driving drought with an immediate test drive.

“Oh my God, I’m going to have to drive? It’s beautiful – I’ve never driven a car like this. I’ve never driven a car, period!” Lopez said upon seeing the Porsche.

“I remember how to drive… I haven’t driven in so long. You’re giving me my independence back!” she added, while taking the convertible for a spin around the block.

Somewhat hilariously for those of us who covet a car of that calibre, Lopez described the 911 GTS as “a little car that I can manage”.

The red 911 GTS was finished with a black leather interior, customised with sparkling ‘JLo’ tags in the doors and on the number plate.

Since receiving the car, Lopez has been photographed behind the wheel of her other vehicles, suggesting the 911 renewed her love of driving after the quarter-century she spent as a passenger.

Sadly, Lopez and Rodriguez ended their engagement in mid 2021 and she reunited with now-husband Affleck shortly thereafter.

The fate of the 911 post-split is not quite clear – but there are suggestions Lopez either returned it to Rodriguez after their break-up, or he took the car back.

In August 2021, a few months after their split, Rodriguez posted a photo of himself posing with his car collection to Instagram – and Lopez’s red 911 featured prominently in the background.

The Instagram post has since been deleted and Lopez hasn’t been spotted driving the 911, so the car’s whereabouts are anyone’s guess.

These days, she prefers riding shotgun in Ben Affleck’s Mercedes-AMG S63, or pulling up to a Vegas chapel in style – reportedly celebrating her recent nuptials in a pink convertible Cadillac.
