Photospins spotted a prototype 2022 Volkswagen Golf R in northern Europe. Several new prototypes passed several laps of the Nürburgring. However, they were not hidden under camouflage.

The prototype design was open to the public. The R model is separated from the regular Golf 8 Variant by a soft spoiler that includes modified bumpers and side sills, as well as custom wheels wrapped in thick and sticky rubber.

The interior will reflect the new Golf R. Like its hatchback sibling, it will receive front sports seats with integrated headrests, additional lateral support and embroidered R logos, exclusive upholstery and trim, and other standard kits.

Also coming: large infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, dedicated gear selector, three-spoke steering wheel with R logo and ambient lighting.

The 2022 Golf R Variant will be powered by the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder of its short-roofed sibling. The engine develops 320 hp. and 420 Nm and is combined with a 7-speed automatic transmission with start control and all-wheel drive.

In hatchback form, the new Golf R hot hatch takes 4.7 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h. But the Variant will carry additional weight over the rear axle, so it will be a little slower. The top speed should be 270 km / h with the optional R-Performance Pack.
